How are ChatGPT Ads different from Google Ads?

How are ChatGPT Ads different from Google Ads?

The biggest difference is keywords. On Google you choose the words you want to appear for and you can see what people searched. On ChatGPT you do neither: OpenAI reads the conversation, your ad and the page you link to, then decides. Both charge by auction and both weigh relevance alongside your bid.

The two are more alike in their mechanics than in their controls, and that catches people out. Somebody who runs Google Ads well will recognise the auction immediately, then find that half the levers they are used to pulling do not exist.

Google-side facts here come from Google’s own documentation and ChatGPT-side facts from OpenAI’s, both read on 4 October 2026. Neither company publishes a comparison, so the table is ours, built from their two sets of words.

What can you control on each?

On Google you control which searches you appear for, through keywords and match types. On ChatGPT you cannot. OpenAI accepts “context hints” describing the conversations where your business makes sense, and states that these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery.

ChatGPT Ads Google Ads
Choosing what you appear for Context hints, which guide but do not control Keywords, with three settings for how loosely they match
Seeing what people asked No, reporting shows impressions, clicks, spend and conversions, never the conversation itself Yes, Google reports the actual searches
Where the ad sits Below the answer, always clearly labelled On the search results page
What decides who shows The conversation, your landing page, your title and copy, your hints, and what else that person uses ChatGPT for if they allow it Your bid, plus the quality of your ad and landing page, plus context
Auction type Relevance-weighted, second-price: you pay a price set by the next bid, not your own Ad Rank, calculated fresh at every auction
Buying options Views, clicks, or conversions such as a sale or sign-up, but you always pay per thousand views or per click, never per conversion Several, including per click
Narrowing who sees it Country; state or region, city or postcode where OpenAI offers them; device; and a customer list you upload, though showing ads only to people on it needs 25,000 or more of them matched (a smaller list can only be used to leave people out) Country; region, city or postcode, depending on the country; a radius around a place; device; and audience lists
Published benchmarks None, and OpenAI says so Not published by Google either; the figures quoted around the web are third-party

Google describes match types as controlling “how closely the keyword needs to match with the user’s search query so that the ad can be considered for the auction”. That is a dial. ChatGPT Ads has no equivalent dial.

Does the highest bid win on either?

No, on both. OpenAI uses “a relevance-weighted, second-price auction to select among eligible ads”. Google says Ad Rank is “calculated based on many factors, including your bid amount, the quality of your ads and landing page, the Ad Rank thresholds, the competitiveness of an auction, the context of the person’s search”.

This is the part that transfers cleanly between the two, and it is the reason a well-built page beats a bigger budget on either platform.

Google states the consequence outright: “even if your competition has higher bids than yours, you can still win a higher position at a lower price by using highly relevant keywords and ads.”

Both also treat the landing page as part of quality rather than as a destination. Google names “the quality of your ads and landing page” in Ad Rank. OpenAI names “the ad’s landing page” among the signals selection considers.

So the shared lesson is the same one: the page is not the afterthought, it is a component of the price you pay.

Why does the page matter more on ChatGPT?

Because there is far less to adjust. On Google a weak page can be offset with sharper keyword targeting, negative keywords and match-type control. None of those exist on ChatGPT: there is no keyword to steer. You can still narrow by location, by device and by a customer list you upload, but none of that changes which conversations you turn up in, so the page and the ad copy carry the whole job.

That changes where the work should go. A Google account can absorb a lot of optimisation that never touches the website. A ChatGPT account cannot.

It also changes what a bad page costs. It reduces how many visitors become customers, as it would anywhere, and it reduces how often the ad is shown in the first place, which is specific to a system that reads the page as part of deciding.

And there is a failure mode Google does not have. If your site turns OpenAI’s automated reader away, the ads can stop entirely. OpenAI names it among the common causes of an ad not serving: “landing pages that block OpenAI user agents or IP addresses”. Details on what is OAI-AdsBot.

Which one is cheaper?

Nobody can answer that honestly yet. OpenAI states that “ChatGPT Ads does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries, or campaign types.” Google does not publish industry benchmarks either, the tables you see quoted come from agencies and tool vendors, not from Google. So both halves of the comparison rest on somebody’s private sample.

What can be compared is the entry price, and only on the side that publishes one. ChatGPT Ads has a published minimum daily budget, 25 US dollars, 15 pounds or 15 euros, and OpenAI suggests starting click campaigns at a maximum bid of $3 to $5. Google publishes no equivalent floor, so there is no like-for-like figure to set beside it.

What cannot be compared is what either returns for your business, and that is the number that decides which is cheaper. Anyone quoting you a cost per customer for ChatGPT advertising is quoting a figure OpenAI has not published. OpenAI’s own advertising site does publish results from named advertisers, and one, Jotform, reports a cost per signup about 30% lower than paid search. Those are one business’s own figures for one month, July 2026, not a forecast for yours.

Our position is that this is a reason to test rather than a reason to wait, and to test with money you can afford to learn from. At the published floor that is about 105 pounds a week.

Should you move budget from Google to ChatGPT?

Not as a swap, and not yet. Google Ads is a mature system with years of your own data behind it. ChatGPT Ads began as a pilot in February 2026, OpenAI says it is still in beta, and it has no published benchmarks at all. Treat it as a new line to test, not a replacement for one that works.

The audiences are also not the same shape. ChatGPT ads do not appear for people on the larger paid plans, or for accounts OpenAI identifies as belonging to under-18s, and OpenAI says it keeps them out of conversations it treats as sensitive. Any reach figure quoted for “ChatGPT users” is the wrong number.

There is one thing worth doing before either budget question, and it is free: find out whether the assistants can read your site at all. A page Google can crawl is not automatically a page OpenAI can. The block is usually not on your website at all, it is the security service in front of it, which treats the two differently.

Check your site, no email, about a minute.

Does paying for ads help ChatGPT recommend you?

No, and this is the difference that matters most. OpenAI states that “Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.” Being named inside an answer and buying the slot beneath it are produced by two separate systems. The recommendation is not for sale, at any price.

This has no equivalent in the Google comparison, because a Google ad has never been mistaken for a Google result in the same way. An assistant’s answer reads as advice, so the separation has to be stated rather than assumed.

It cuts both ways, and the second half is the useful half. If advertising cannot buy you a place in the answer, then not advertising cannot lose you one. A business barred from ChatGPT advertising by category can still be the business ChatGPT names.

Earning that is different work: making the site readable to the assistants that do not run JavaScript, answering the questions people actually ask, and being present in the search index ChatGPT draws on. That is Discover, and it is the half you can start on today whether or not advertising is open to your trade.

If somebody tells you that spending on ChatGPT ads will help ChatGPT recommend you, they have either not read what OpenAI published or they are hoping you have not.
